Social isolation is a complex issue with people feeling isolated for a variety of reasons. They often find themselves spending more time alone.

Being alone may leave people more vulnerable to loneliness which can affect their health and well-being. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risks for physical health problems such as heart disease, depression and cognitive decline as well as significant financial and mental health issues.

People who already experience poor health may be more likely to be socially isolated or lonely. This can put their physical and mental health at risk. Evidence shows that these adults are less healthy, have longer hospital stays, are readmitted to the hospital more often, and are more likely to die earlier than those with meaningful and supportive social connections. Our Neighbourhood Centre is a lifeline to many across the area and our groups and activities are designed to combat these negative effects whilst offering support or signposting to those in need. Over winter 22/23, we saw first-hand, the impact of the cost of living crisis with many of our members being forced to choose between heating and eating.

Spark is a community-led organisation and offers a variety of volunteering opportunities from helping with teas and coffees for our weekly activities to formal

programmes for pre-employability and digital skills and has big and exciting plans for late 2023 and into 2024.
